Is the 30 mil thick vinyl liner better than the 20 mil for an in-ground pool?

Deciding the best thicknesses for an in-ground pool vinyl liner depends on several factors:

  • How long the pool is exposed to harsh weather conditions: If the pool is exposed to the sun, extra thickness offers adequate protection from ultra violet rays. Also during the winter season there is less chance of ice damage to a thicker vinyl liner.
  • The type of surface the liner will be laid on: If you are placing the vinyl liner on a rough surface material, such as a concrete or a sand and concrete mixture, the appropriate, preferred thickness of a vinyl pool liner would be 30 mil.
  • How frequently the pool is used: If the pool is used heavily or if something sharp was to come into contact with your liner (animal claws or sharp edged cleaning tools), there is less chance of any damage with a thicker pool liner.
  • DurabilityAlthough a 30 mil thick vinyl liner will typically cost you about 5 – 10% more, it will last longer. A 20 mil vinyl liner normally lasts about 10- 12 years on average and a 30 mil thick vinyl liner last for approximately 16 years.
