The difference between a hot tub and spa

While the terms hot tub and spa are used interchangeably and they share common features such as looks and functionality, they also share various differences too. Functionally, both of them are designed to help you relax and unwind using warm water to lessen tension in the muscles. Being aware of the difference between the features, materials, and design will help you choose the right unit for you.

Hot tubs are traditionally made from wood with no nails or screws. The wood planks need to be swollen enough to create a water tight fit between the seams. In modern hot tubs, liners can be added to protect the wood and fasteners to keep the unit together.

Spas are not made from wood and are typically molded from acrylic or fiber glass into a variety of shapes and sizes. Spas have seats which are cast right into the unit for people to sit. It also may have both a deep and shallow side to accommodate people who wish to stand.

Water Jets

Water Jets are built in both hot tubs and spas but there is a difference in where the water jets are placed. Hot tubs generally have jets located around and beneath the seats. Spas have jets shooting directly up through the seats and floor.

Hot tubs and spas differ in shape, size and material used. It is important to know the difference between both hot tubs and spas before making a final decision.

Hot tubs are not portable as they are heavy structures designed to be put into place and left permanently.

Spas are usually made of acrylic or fiberglass, and are lighter than hot tubs. Not only may some spas be moved if the owner relocates to a new home, but many are designed to be placed either indoors or outdoors at the owner's discretion. They can even be moved seasonally if desired.

A hot tub and spa generally have the same function they are used for soaking and relaxation. They are both great in relieving tension and stress.
